In the cosmology of Thedas, the Veil is not merely a wall but a living filter. It was forged by the Maker to keep the chaotic energies of the Fade at bay, ensuring that humanity could live without constant spiritual intrusion. The barrier is strongest during the day and thins significantly when mortals sleep, which is why dreams are so vivid and why mages can sometimes sense spirits while awake if their connection is strong enough. When the Veil weakens due to magical overuse or external forces like the Blight, daemons—spirits corrupted by dark emotions—can slip through, possessing humans or manifesting physically in a phenomenon known as an apostasy.

Reader's Guide

The history of the Veil is intertwined with the very creation of Thedas. According to Chantry dogma, the Maker constructed the barrier after the First Blight to protect humanity from the Old Gods and their servants. Before this, the boundary between worlds was porous, leading to a chaotic existence where spirits walked freely among mortals. Throughout the ages, the Veil has been strained by the rise of powerful civilizations like Tevinter Imperium, whose mages often pushed against its limits for forbidden knowledge. The Blight itself is a direct assault on this barrier; when an Archdemon rises, it tears holes in the fabric of reality, allowing hordes of darkspawn and corrupted spirits to flood into the physical world. Legendary figures such as Andraste are said to have walked close to the Fade, her spiritual strength capable of bending the Veil's rules. In modern times, the Circle of Magi was established partly to monitor these breaches, training mages to understand the barrier so they do not accidentally tear it open with uncontrolled magic.
