Andraste was born an Alamarri, not a slave within the Tevinter Imperium. She married the Alamarri warlord Maferath and led a rebellion from the north against Tevinter's magical tyranny. Her teachings emphasized spiritual freedom and the rejection of mage tyranny, attracting thousands who sought refuge from Tevinter laws. However, her campaign was cut short not by capture during flight, but by betrayal: Maferath handed her over to the Tevinter Archon Hessarian. During her trial, she refused to renounce her beliefs or submit to the authority of the magisters, even when faced with death. This defiance turned her execution into a legendary act of martyrdom that would outlast the Imperium itself. Following her death, her ashes were scattered to the wind by order of the Archon to prevent any shrine from being built over her remains. Despite this attempt to erase her physical legacy, her followers—known as the Followers of the Flame or simply her disciples—preserved her story through oral tradition and eventually written scripture. Centuries later, Kordillus Drakon founded the Chantry, establishing its structure and becoming the first Emperor of Orlais. Justinia I was the first to hold the title of Divine, institutionalizing Andraste's memory into a powerful political force that dominates much of Thedas today.
