Mage-Templar War

A war of faith and magic that shattered the Chantry's hold on Thedas forever.

The Mage-Templar War was a devastating civil conflict within the Chantry that erupted across Thedas, centered primarily in the city of Kirkwall. It pitted the Templar Order and their mage wards against mages seeking freedom from the Circle system's confinement, challenging the religious dogma that governed magic for centuries. This event serves as the climax of Dragon Age II and sets the stage for Dragon Age: Inquisition. The war fundamentally altered the balance of power between the Chantry, the Templars, and the mages, leading to a collapse of order that allowed greater threats to emerge from the Fade.

Lore & Background

For centuries, the Chantry maintained control over magic through the Circle system, where mages were conscripted upon discovery to prevent demonic possession. Templars served as warden-magisters to enforce this rule, often resorting to harsh measures like the Harrowing or execution for apostates. Tensions rose when a radical faction of mages began questioning their status as second-class citizens within the religious hierarchy. The conflict was fueled by ideological extremism from both sides. Grand Enchanter Meredith Stannard represented the Templar view that magic must be suppressed at all costs, while Anders and his allies believed mages deserved autonomy to protect themselves. The assassination attempt in Kirkwall acted as a spark in dry tinder, igniting a war that quickly spread beyond the city walls. The aftermath left deep scars on Thedas's society. With the Circles destroyed or abandoned, magic became decentralized and dangerous. The Chantry lost its authority to regulate mages, forcing the creation of new institutions like the Inquisition to restore order before the world fell into chaos.

In Their Own Story

Rain slicked the cobblestones outside the Circle Tower as armored boots marched in unison. Inside, the air smelled of ozone and fear. A young mage pressed her back against cold stone, clutching a staff that hummed with unstable energy. The Templars were coming up the stairs; she could hear their heavy armor clanking against the steps. She whispered a prayer to the Maker, not for forgiveness, but for strength. With a flick of her wrist, blue fire erupted from the tip of her staff, illuminating the shadows where demons waited in the wings.

Reader's Guide

The conflict began in Kirkwall following the assassination attempt on Grand Enchanter Meredith Stannard by the apostate Anders. Depending on the actions of the protagonist Hawke, either the Templars or the Mages initiated open violence first. If Meredith survived, she declared martial law and ordered the execution of all mages within the Circle Tower. Conversely, if Anders succeeded, he became a vigilante spirit known as Justice, leading the Mage Resistance to attack the Order directly. Regardless of the specific trigger, the result was catastrophic for Kirkwall. The Circle Tower fell during the Breach event, allowing demons into the city and causing mass casualties among both sides. Surviving mages fled into the wilds or joined underground resistance cells, abandoning the safety of the Chantry's protection. This collapse of order spread beyond Ferelden and Orlais, destabilizing the entire continent's magical regulation system. Ultimately, the war concluded not with a treaty, but with mutual exhaustion and the rise of the Inquisition. The Chantry lost its monopoly on controlling magic, while the Templars were forced to operate without their traditional Circle infrastructure. This power vacuum left Thedas vulnerable to greater threats, setting the stage for future conflicts involving ancient gods and elven spirits seeking dominion over the mortal world.
