Their culture stands in stark contrast to the Chantry and the mages of the Circle of Magi. The Qunari view the Chantry as a corrupt institution weakened by hypocrisy, while they see magic not as a divine gift but as a dangerous force that must be strictly controlled or suppressed. The Qun assigns specific roles to men (warriors/leaders) and women (administrators/spies) based on perceived nature, with both being equally valued within their designated spheres. Non-Qunari converts are assigned roles through the 'viddathari' system; while the Qunari reject chattel slavery as practiced by others, they enslave or kill those outside the Qun ('bas').

The Qunari are an expansionist faction driven by the philosophy of the Qun, which demands absolute conformity to a collective purpose. Their primary goal is to subjugate or convert other societies in Thedas, believing that only through the Qun can true peace and order be achieved. Members include the warrior caste, known as Arishok leaders who govern their territories, and various specialized roles such as spies (Varric) and enforcers. They are distinct from human nations due to their lack of individualism and their willingness to use force to impose their way of life on others. In the broader conflict of Dragon Age, they serve as a major antagonist force in the north, challenging the Chantry's authority and disrupting the balance of power. Their presence forces other factions to unite against a common threat or risk being absorbed into their rigid society.
