The origins of Darkspawn trace back to the fall of the Old Gods. When the Tevinter Imperium imprisoned these ancient entities deep underground, their corruption seeped into the surrounding rock and creatures, twisting them into monstrous forms over millennia. Unlike normal undead, they are not dead but rather living beings twisted by a magical disease known as the Taint. This Taint is contagious, spreading through blood contact or spores released during combat. It slowly consumes the victim's mind and body until they become part of the swarm. The cycle continues until an Archdemon rises to lead them, at which point a Blight begins. Only the Grey Wardens, who willingly accept the Taint to fight fire with fire, possess the means to permanently end these cycles by slaying the leading dragon. Despite their mindless nature in most cases, Darkspawn exhibit terrifying tactical coordination during sieges. They burrow through stone, scale walls, and overwhelm fortified cities without fear of death or pain. Their existence is a grim reminder that beneath the beauty of Thedas lies an ancient evil waiting to reclaim the surface.

Engaging Darkspawn carries extreme risk; even a minor scratch can doom a warrior to a slow death.
